Forced into purchasing something he buys a cane that is surmounted
by a silver wolfs head.
Later he persuades her to visit a fortune-teller at a gypsy
encampment. They are accompanied Jenny Williams (Fay Helm),
who's palm is read by Bela (Bela Lugosi).
He is a werewolf and attacks her in the woods. Larry kills
the werewolf with his silver headed cane but is bitten in
the process. He recovers from his wounds but soon strange
murders start to happen in the village.
The Wolfman is one of those old black and white movies that
creates atmosphere in a way modern colour can't. Its locations
and studio sequences set up the charm of village life and
contrast it dramatically with misty menacing woods where all
forms of evil can prowl.
Pairing short Claude Raines and tall Lon Chaney Jnr. as aristocratic
father and artisan son appears odd at first but both players
overcome this disadvantage as the story develops, and the
supporting cast is excellent.
Evlyn Ankers is attractive and gains our sympathy as Gwen,
the caring friend, who desperately tries to help Larry in
his awful predicament.
Again Universal has presented us with a monster for whom
we feel sorry despite his horrific deeds. Remember, 'Whoever
is bitten by a werewolf becomes a werewolf himself'.
So people let's be careful out there.
