Thunderbirds

Review by James Anthony

Thunderbirds should have been one of the great kids' movies.

Its heroes are young teenagers, the baddie is an old meanie, there are heaps of gadgets and technology, super futuristic flying things called the Thunderbirds, and there is not a lot of dialogue to have to mull over.

If you know of the 1960s TV series of the same name you pretty much will slot right into the storyline.

Thunderbirds

International Rescue is a family of rich do-gooders who have an amazing array of vehicles with which to help people in trouble.

They live on an isolated island in the Pacific, have a British ally in one Lady Penelope (Sophia Myles) and her butler Parker (Ron Cook) and have an enemy called The Hood (Ben Kingsley). I shouldn't forget Brains (Anthony Edwards) who is a genius.

There are five Thunderbirds - Jeff Tracy (Bill Paxton) is the dad and then there are Scott, Virgil, Gordon and the youngest Alan (Brady Corbet). He hasn't joined up yet - he is still at school - and it irks him big time that his family is off doing exciting adventures while he studies.

Still, it's the holidays and he joins them on Tracy Island.

Little do they know that the evil Hood is targeting them so he can steal the Thunderbirds vehicles and rob banks. As an extra he can make people believe it is International Rescue committing the robberies.

Anyway, the Hood manages to get the older Tracys out of the way and so it is up to Alan, Brains' son Fermat and TinTin to save the world. Oh, we can't forget to mention the lovely Lady P - superbly played by Sophia Myles - who has some of the best lines in the movie. Throw in Ron Cook as Parker and they steal every scene.

Together they battle it out with the Hood and his henchmen in a fun series of fights.

Thunderbirds will not be everyone's cup of tea and it could have been better. However, children will love it and there is enough humour to keep adults watching. The highlight from this point of view has to be when the Hood takes control of Brains' body and moves him like a puppet. Great homage to the TV series!

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras 80%
