A stalker is raping and brutally murdering prostitutes in New Orleans. Chief investigator on the case is Detective Wes Block (Clint Eastwood), a single father with two young daughters.

Since his wife left Wes has been a frequent customer at the bars and massage parlours in New Orleans red light district, Storyville.

After the first murder it becomes apparent that the victims are women with whom the detective has had a sexual relationship. It seems the killer is attempting to throw suspicion on the vunerable Block.

Tightrope

In the course of his investigation Wes meets rape crisis counsellor, self-defence instructor and friend of the Mayor, Beryl Thibodeaux (Genevieve Bujold). Their involvement with each other heats up as the pressure to find the villain mounts.

Tightrope is a very appropriate title for this film.

It is one of Clint Eastwood's finest pieces of acting. Outwardly he looks like supercool 'dirty' Harry Callahan but inwardly he's a mess. He's into the kinkier side of behaviour, bondage and so forth that only hookers can satisfy discretely and impersonally.

The film is well paced, full of suspense and has a brilliant bluesy score; very appropriate for its setting in New Orleans. It isn't a film for prudes. There is much nudity, innuendo, violence and blood.

These brutal scenes contrast markedly with the tender sequences between father and daughters and love he shows for his multibreed pack of adopted stray dogs.

As a police psychiatrist explains, "There's a darkness inside all of us, Wes. You, me, and the man down the street. Some have it under control. Others act it out. The rest of us try to walk a tightrope between the two".

Tightrope is definitely an adults only DVD. No children allowed and, to watch it with teenagers would be plain embarrassing.

Conclusion: 80% Extras: 20%.
