Tortilla Soup

If you are in the mood for a quality and refreshing change of pace then Tortilla Soup may be just what you are after.

It is a tender and amusing view of a Mexican chef in America who spends his life taking care of his restaurant guests and also his three live-at-home daughters.

Hector Elizondo plays Martin Naranjo, an uber chef who creates what look to be the most delightful traditional Mexican meals. Cactus has never looked this good!

He is also an uber dad to his girls and though they fight and bicker between themselves there is love and respect for the old man - despite his obvious desire to be overly protective.

Each week he prepares a gorgeous meal for the family and each week one of the daughters has a big surprise to throw into the proceedings.

The daughters are wonderful. Elizabeth Pena is the oldest and a very conservative teacher. Next is Jacqueline Obradors, a successful businesswoman, and then comes the flighty one (and youngest) Tamara Mello as an unsettled college student.

It is very hard to fault any in this cast - Raquel Welch has a terrific role - and you get wrapped up in their lives very quickly.

Tortilla Soup is a similar movie to Eat Drink Man Woman, although is more homey than that classic.

Still, it is a really enjoyable movie that fans of quality cinema will like.

Conclusion: Movie 85% Extras 20%
