Transformers :
Super God Masterforce Collection

Review by Sean Lynch

Does anyone else get the feeling that the DVD label that started releasing the 'Old School' Transformers episodes about six months prior to the live-action movie are swimming in a pool of money 'Scrooge McDuck' style?

Luckily for them - these cartoons are actually pretty darn cool (unlike several other 'cartoon-to-movie' transfers which original episodes left a lot to be desired upon being transferred to DVD).

Transformers : Super God Master Force

The thing is, Transformers : Super God Masterforce, is awesome... but only during the two or three episodes that are in English...

As the story goes - in the years following Headmasters, Earth has been peaceful, but hidden, living among humans - are 'Pretenders'. A small team of Autobots have watched over the human race, assuming human size and appearance. However, the sudden re-emergence of their Decepticon foes forces Earth's secret defenders to come out of hiding.

Soon the conflict escalates and with the power of Masterforce, where both sides start to recruit a new batch of heroes. Behind it all, a sinister force manipulates events, culminating in the creation of the most powerful super robot - the Godmasters!

Despite continuing on from the original tales of Transformers : Generation 1 (or, "that awesome cartoon we used to watch before school" as its most commonly known in Australia) is a Japanese sequel. Meaning, there is very little in the way of translations.

It's kind of odd really, because you would imagine that the Americans (especially after the phenomenal success of the original Transformers in the 80s) would have happily voiced over this season.

That aside. The visuals are great, some superb Anime is on offer here - and if anything - it's the animation that is the real selling point here.

For the real obsessive fans only (if only because there is a whole lot more subtitles to read) or for those who can speak the language. But well worth a look either way.

Autobots... ROLLOUT!

EXTRAS

As always, Madman present some of the best Special Features packages of any company. Included is an all new cover by IDW Transformers artist Guido Guidi, an extensive introductory booklet with episode guide, Toy gallery (well worth checking out if only to see some of the ridiculous things they 'transform' into), Character art gallery, as well as some hilariously camp Japanese toy ads.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras: 60%
