Trekkies 2

Review by Clint Morris

“When I was younger my mother cooked me Apple Pie. I told her I liked it, and so she made it again and again.

“Then, one day, it was not there. I think Star Trek will be like that apple pie one day.”

Trekkies 2

Umm, what I think this “Star Trek fan” is trying to say is that the voyages of the Starship Enterprise won’t be around forever – but whilst it is, we’ll dress up in wacky clothes, paint our kids' faces and trade swap cards in their hundreds.

Yup, I was never quite able to get a grasp on the fascination of “Star Trek”. Sure, I enjoy the show – maybe even the film’s more – but to want to force Ma into sewing me up a Starfleet costume and walking down the main street in it? Nope. Not unless I was smoking something pretty strong.

“Trekkies 2” is the sequel to a documentary produced a few years back where “Next Generation” star Denise Crosby ventures around America introducing us to some of the more extreme fans of Gene Roddenberry’s series.

This time, Crosby explores other galaxies: notably, Europe – where she discovers there are just as many pals of Spock. The Germans have built their own Enterprise bridge, infinite kids are in Trek-attire thanks to their folks, one guy in Britain has turned his bedroom into a room of the Enterprise – and has consequently listed it on eBay for two million dollars, whilst some inauspicious Australians with a penchant for gazing on the male members of the series also get their mug on lens.

In addition, Crosby catches up with some of the folks who appeared in the original “Trekkies”, and whilst most are still as obsessed as ever, there’s a couple that have ostensibly got the hint.

“Trekkies 2” isn’t as amusing or fresh as the original – it starts repeating itself – but if you’re a fan of the show or on the other hand, rallying to shut down the alliance, it’s worth a looksee.

DVD Extras

Extras include a stout chunk of deleted scenes, a couple of interesting fan films, and an informative – and reasonably amusing – commentary track featuring members of the cast and crew.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras 60%
