The Belles of St Trinian's

A Sultan sends his daughter Princess Fatima to an English school for young ladies.

The one he has chosen is the internationally renowned St. Trinian's, so she can check on the progress of his racehorse Arab Boy who is stabled nearby.

St. Trinian's is an unusual institution barely controlled by Headmistress Millicent Fritton (Alastair Sim).

At the start of term the local village is sent into a panic at the awful prospect of the pupils returning. The chickens return to their coops in a panic, the local policeman locks himself into a cell and phones his inspector with the dread cry "They're back!"

Events follow quickly as wide boy Harry (George Cole), who sells the booze the girls produce in the lab and keeps them in cigarettes, considers the possibility of sabotaging Arab Boy now the favourite in an upcoming race.

The police also take an interest in the form of Sergeant Ruby Gates (Joyce Grenfell) who works undercover as a teacher.

The Belles of St. Trinian's is the first of a series of films based on the brilliant cartoons of Ronald Searle. Alastair Sim is superb in drag as the eccentric headmistress and also plays a double role as her grasping brother Clarence.

To an older generation schoolgirls wearing gymslips, high heels, fishnet stockings, smoking cigars and sipping gin the film is risqué. To their grandchildren, the slapstick comedy in it is good for a laugh.

Conclusion: Movie 75% Extras - 20%
