Tina Turner: Celebrate!

She's the voice of Mad Max 3 (We Don't Need Another Hero), the voice of rugby league (The Best) and the voice of grannies everywhere.

Yup, Tina Turner. One of the great rock performers and a woman who has done it tough, had huge success, and still comes across as a really nice person.

To celebrate her ... wait for it ... 60th birthday, Tina got a few thousand mates around for a concert that includes some of her best songs.

I say some, because Private Dancer is not included and that, in this less-than-humble opinion, is one of her songs ever.

Still, this DVD has a terrific line up of songs that includes River Deep, Mountain High, We Don't Need Another Hero, The Best, Nutbush City Limits and It's Only Love with Bryan Adams.

The concert itself is a very comfortable-feeling one, with a small circular stage surrounded by the audience adding to the nightclubby atmosphere.

Even at 60, Tina shows she can still belt out a tune, although her outfits are a tad more demure than when she was a spring chicken of 55.

The songs are divided by famous faces praising the lady's abilities. Some of these are naff - like who cares what Ricky Martin has to say about her - but others, like Cher, are terrific.

The documentary-style breaks are very revealing of her days as a cotton-picking kid in Nutbush, through the early fame with Ike (and his brutality) and how she became a born-again superstar in the 1980s.

There is some terrific black-and-white footage of her performances with Ike and some great associated comments such as Sting's "I lost my virginity to the sound of River Deep, Mountain High."

One absolute ripper comment was from someone who said watching Tina sing made him realise what it was to be a man for the first time. She had the good sense to blush!

Celebrate! is a damn fine birthday concert, but seems a little too stagemanaged and, therefore, lacks some of the passion we've come to expect from Tina Turner. Great for fans, though.

Conclusion: Movie 85%
