Twister (Special Edition)

As disaster movies go, Twister is one of the better ones. Okay, the script never had a chance of an Oscar, but it would be fairer to describe it as easy viewing rather than bad.

The cast is pretty damn good and works well with the material, but it is the special effects and sound that raises Twister above the dross of the likes of Earthquake, Airport and The Swarm.

Few movies have got the feel and power of Nature's deadly side looking so right and Twister's tornados are both realistic and frightening.

The movie centres on a separated couple, Jo (Helen Hunt) and Bill (Bill Paxton), who used to specialise in chasing tornados together in order to get important and rare information on the things.

Now Jo leads the team of experts and Bill turns up with his new fiancee Melissa (Jami Gertz) in order to get divorce papers signed. The imminent arrival of a twister, however, sparks not only his interest in hunting storms, but also his ex.

The first storm may have whet his appetite, but that's nothing on what is looming as larger tornados look like joining together to create what is known as a super storm.

Throw into the action-mix a fierce rivalry with a former colleague Jonas (Cary Elwes), who is not only backed by a high-spending corporation but has stolen their idea for gathering info from within a tornado, and you have a pretty good adventure to follow.

The video transfer of Twister is excellent. Not only are the images sharp and clean, but the depth of colour is first class.

Sound-wise, however, Twister is just plain scary. When the winds start to touch down and things fly around you will be seeking shelter under the coffee table. Brilliant sound.

Stunning special effects and a superb transfer make Twister one of those easy-to-watch films you'll play again and again.

Conclusion: 80% Extras: 50%.
