American History X

Review by James Anthony

My goodness! What a difference a shaved cranium, tattoo and goatee make to one of Hollywood's more intellectual stars.

How is this so? Well, watch American History X and any teeny tiny portion of an idea that Edward Norton cannot be scary enough to play a mean, violent, neo-nazi are dashed away fairly quickly. In fact, faster than a forehead on to a nose.

And, if that line makes you go ooogy, then American History X won't be your sort of movie. It's nasty, violent, sets its scope on the lower forms of life and would leave a horrid taste in your mouth if it wasn't for the fact it shows that there is always hope.

Norton plays Derek Vinyard, a young guy who has taken his father's dislike of other races to an extreme and rather than just mouthing off, as his Dad did before his murder, react with unprovoked savagery towards them.

As the street leader of the neo-Nazis, Norton is nothing short of brilliant. He's hard looking, warped, unafraid to commit violence and eager to further the mindless teachings of his chief, played to want-to-punch-his-lights-out perfection by Stacy Keach.

Keach is a middle-brain-level, self-appointed genius who reckons he can control people through his own cowardly brand of hate. You know, the trust-me-I'm-a-good-sort slimeball who melts at the threat of independent thought and anyone with guts.

The history on offer is following the cocky Norton through a murder charge, his jail sentence and eventual transformation in an effort to save his young brother Danny (Edward Furlong) from following the same self-defeating path.

American History X is the tertiary-level Romper Stomper and is a highly charged examination of how hate can be disastrously dangerous.

Conclusion: Movie: 90% DVD Extras: 60%
