The Usual Suspects

Kaiser Soze is the type of crim who strikes fear into the hearts of lesser crims.

By that, we mean any cold-hearted killer who is not prepared to kill his loved ones without blinking can be regarded as a wusser in Soze's eyes.

Like we said, he is a terrifying man and leaves an indelible mark upon the psyche of five top-notch lawbreakers.

There is Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey) a slimey little grass and career crim, McManus (Stephen Baldwin) a psycho if ever there was one, Benicio Del Toro (Fenster), Hockney (Kevin Pollack) and ex-crooked cop Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne).

The group is picked up as "the usual suspects" for a crime and is thrown together in a cell to face a line-up parade. While waiting for their eventual release, the ever-so-slightly annoyed chaps decide to embark on a jewellery robbery that will not only get them plenty of money, but embarrass the hell out of the police.

Their expertise makes the difficult job easy and they find themselves approached by a mysterious man known as Mr Kobayashi (Pete Postlethwaite). His employer, a certain Kaiser Soze, has a job offer for the guys and it is not one they can refuse.

Each, has in the past, unknowingly stolen from Soze, but he is happy to forgive the insults by getting them to halt a drug deal worth almost $100million.

It is not an easy job - suicide mission being more apt - but if they succeed they will not only be forgiven for their indiscretion with his property, they will also get to pocket the drugs cash.

Told in flashback and with no small amount of twists in the plot, The Usual Suspects is a masterful thriller that will have you straining to work out what's what.

The ensemble cast is superb - even Baldwin acts out of his skin - but Spacey and Byrne are the pair who steal the scenes.

The transfer is pretty good, although the images are a little soft, and the lack of a 5.1 soundtrack is almost overcome by a boosted Dolby 2.0 effort.

The Usual Suspects is a movie you have to see.

Conclusion: Movie 90%, Extras 70%
