The movie focuses on monster slayer Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman)
who is sent to Eastern Europe to help end the villainous rule
of one Count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh).
Aside from ridding the world of that blood-sucking beast,
Van Helsing hopes to save the royal line of Anna Valerious
(Kate Beckinsale) whose entire family will be damned forever
if she dies before Dracula is killed.
To help Van Helsing is a very funny character called Carl
(David Wenham). He's a priest (well almost) and would not
be out of place as Q in the James Bond movies. Wenham is hilarious
in the role with a host of one-liners that would make a stand-up
comic jealous.
Jackman is solid as Van Helsing and puts in a fine performance
as the killer of unnatural beings. Kate Beckinsale is - well,
her costume is sensational with great pants and a bodice to
die for. Otherwise, her action scenes are good, but the character
The real star of Van Helsing is Richard Roxburgh as Dracula.
He takes a tough role - keep in mind who has played Dracula
before him - and absolutely nails it.
Move over Gary Oldman, Roxburgh kicks your Drac's butt!
And his female sidekicks (well every Dracula has to have
busty acolytes in low cut flimsy nightgowns) are pretty damn
sexy - if deadly.
Van Helsing is a very good movie that easily shades the most
recent of similar movies The League of
Extraordinary Gentlemen.
The video transfer is very good, but suffers from minor aliasing.
Sound-wise Van Helsing is also highly rated, with clear dialogue
throughout.
