Vince Vaughn's
Wild West Comedy Show

Review by Sean Lynch

It's hard to believe that at one time or another, Vince Vaughn was considered an "actor". He wasn't just a guy that looked tired all the time, he wasn't just another star to appear in a Will Ferrell movie... he was an actual actor.

Have we forgotten he took on the iconic role of Norman Bates in the Psycho remake already? Have we forgotten he stood alongside JLO in the under rated crime thriller The Cell? Do we forget that he was an action star during his Jurassic Park 2 phase?

The guy actually had some cred - but now seems pretty happy to live the life of a Rat Packer, drinkin' and partyin'.

And to be honest... why the hell wouldn't you!

Vince Vaughns Wild West Comedy Show

Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show is the perfect example of a man who has hit the heights of his career - and using his time to... well... pretty much do whatever the hell he wants to do with it.

It's literally a gross abuse of super stardom - but bugger me if it doesn't look like fun.

This fairly by-the-book documentary hits the road with Vince Vaughn ("post Wedding Crashers Vaughn"... not "Swingers indie actor Vaughn") as he takes on America's heartland with the wildest comedy tour of all time.

There are plenty of movie star friends that pop up along the way (Justin Long, Jon Favreau and Dwight Yoakam to name a few) and join Vince... but at the end of the day - this is really about four struggling American comics trying to catch themselves some reflected glory (and a regular income) for a 30 city, 30 night tour.

It's quite an interesting exercise, which gives quite a fairly in depth insight into both sides of fame (those with a name... and those who want one). However, you can't help but get the feeling that what initially sounded like a cool idea in Vaughn's head quickly turns into a way to boost his ego by being around "less famous" folk and being in a position to help them.

Having people want things from you is the biggest power trip someone can have, and despite his intentions being good, there is definitely a sense of enjoying the journey for the wrong reasons.

That said, it is quite a fun little doco. The comedians are quite good (but even with a lot of focus - you can hardly say they are the next batch of stand ups destined for greatness... they are... well... just ok), the back stage antics are interesting (especially a trip to support Hurricane Katrina victims) - however, the highlights really come from the faces we already know.

Which, ultimately, defeats the purpose of the tour.

Well worth checking out, particularly for wannabe stand up comics looking for a taste of what it's like "on the road" - and a wet dream for Vince Vaughn fans (if only to see how much of a boozy party boy the guy really is).
