The Watcher

Review by James Anthony

Old Keanu Reeves must be loving his acting at the moment. Instead of playing dopes or action heros, he’s really taken to being the villain.

He was very good in The Gift and in The Watcher he plays the killer as a complete and utterly normal psycho.

He’s David Allen Griffin and he likes nothing better than to stalk young women and then strangle them with piano wire. He is a charmer!

He used to prey on the citizenesses of Los Angeles, but has since moved to Chicago. The reason is that he’s following the former LA cop Joel Campbell (James Spader) who is recovering from the trauma of his girlfriend dying.

Campbell’s taking anti-depressants and seeing a shrink (Marisa Tomei) to get over the incident, but soon is forced to confront the guy he used to investigate.

Giffin wants to renew contact with the policeman and so sends him a picture of a woman he is going to kill within 24 hours. That sparks massive action and the tension builds as the clock counts down.

We don’t want to give too much away, but from there the pace of The Watcher really picks up.

Spader is excellent as the suffering Campbell and Reeves resists the urges he must have felt to go over the top. It’s nicely shot, although gets a tad too arty at times, and the transfer is very good.

I’d watch it again.

Conclusion: 80%
