Imagine being able to get into the mind of the opposite sex and use that information to your own advantage - at work and at play.

Now imagine a storyline where a handsome hunk, who reckons he's God's gift to women, has a career crisis where his advertising prowess is called into question. To make matters worse for him, a female is appointed as his boss to grab the women's market and return his ad agency to its former No.1 spot.

Then throw into the mix a freakish accident that leaves him with the ability to hear what women think.

The doorwoman at his flat calls him a cab, and mentally calls him: "my little sweet buns".

The would-be actress in the coffee shop desperately wants him to take her out.

The businesswomen walking in the street all think he's a spunk.

So, it's a bit of a shock to Nick Marshal (Mel Gibson) when he gets to his office and discovers that most of the women he works with think he's a sexist creep.

Knowing his reputation, new boss Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt) sets an office-wide task that will show her if he can change his dinosaur ways.

Using his new powers - and cunning - Marshal turns into the only man on the planet who understands women and turns his career fortunes around.

It has to be said that only an actor with the charm, looks and ability of Mel Gibson could play such a role and in What Women Want, he is absolutely terrific.

A guys' guy he can take himself off, use ex-foliating patches, sample a bra and even dress in stockings. The scene where he tries waxing his legs will not only have chaps wetting themselves, but also feeling a stab of conscience at what women put themselves through.

Aside from his relationship with women, Marshall has to try to deal with a teenage daughter and her problems with boyfriends. You will absolutely cringe and laugh, or laugh then cringe, when she - with her boyfriend - walks in on Marshall as he is testing out the stockings, bra and ex-foliates.

And, just watch for his reaction when he hears what his daughter is planning for Prom night!

The humour is nicely balanced, as is the storyline, which moves into a romantic mode with an easy blend of "this is amusing" and "this is fun".

The transfer on to DVD is very clean and the audio is spot on.

What Women Want is a very watchable comedy that will not only give you a great night's entertainment, but also leave a smile on your face at the end.

Conclusion: Movie 85%, Extras 70%
