Wings Over Afghanistan

Review by James Anthony

After the September 11 attacks on the United States, the US military invaded Afghanistan to wipe out the terrorist training camps there.

Afghanistan has been the graveyard of many armies in history - the British and more recently the Soviets - but American airpower made things much easier in this conflict.

Wings Over Afghanistan

The US and its Northern Alliance allies were up against the governing Taliban - extremist Muslims who were fanatics in keeping the laws as they decreed them.

Death sentences were common.

In Wings Over Afghanistan, the Discovery Channel looks at how US air power enabled the overthrow of the brutal regime and how the various weapons - from the Korean War-era B52s, to super smart weapons - were used and how successful they were.

But the 52-minute documentary also looks at the ground operations and is more an overview of the Afghanistan War rather than just looking at the planes.

Wings Over Afghanistan is excellent viewing for military buffs and while done with a US bias is good solid insight for teachers and educators.

Conclusion: Movie 80%
