The Wizards of Waverly Place is yet another repackaging of this tried and tested formula. The
film is basically a movie length episode of the Disney Channel's TV
show of the same name. The Russo family (made up of three wizard
children, and two mortal parents) are taking a trip to the Caribbean.
Alex (our leading little lady - a typical sulky, rude, stubborn,
self-centred 16-year-old) has somehow convinced her parents to leave
her behind; but, after a magical mishap, is forced to go on the family
vacation against her will. Poor soul... Getting a free trip to the
Caribbean. She truly is the unluckiest teenager ever. After
moping around the island for days, the wisecracking Alex accidentally
wishes that her parents had never met. Poof! Her parents have never
met, and suddenly her very existence and that of her two brothers is
put in jeopardy. Luckily, her brothers still remember everything and
they have two whole days before they disappear forever. And
(super-dooper-mega-luckily) there happens to be a magic stone located
somewhere on the island that has the power to reverse the spell. Soon
Alex realises that her family isn't so bad, so they set out to find the
stone and put everything back the way it was. An adult doesn't sit down
to watch a movie like this expecting to actually enjoy it. And while
the film isn't the best kid's movie ever made, it certainly isn't
bad. Sure, it's formulaic, it's
predictable, it's been done many many times before...but the acting,
script and comedy is surprisingly good. The kids are sure to get a kick
out of the magic, and the parents are sure the love the message it's
trying to deliver. DVD EXTRAS
Disney is renown for having some great special
features... but sadly doesn't deliver this time. There is only one
bonus feature, entitled "Wiz Pix", which is hosted by the stars and
takes a look at their favourite parts of the movie - both on and off
set. It's a mixture of bloopers, photos, interviews and production
secrets. The kids will enjoy it, but they could have added a few more
extras. Conclusion:
Movie 70% Extras: 40%
