While
I never got into the wrestling myself, I can vividly recall it as the
single form of entertainment that ruled the schoolyard from Grade 6 to
Year 9. It made no sense to me, but there was constantly talk of
"Stunners", "Undertakers" and "Bodyslams". Bizarre words that just
became commonplace amongst the teenage boys of my era.
Sure, I remember the times prior to that - a time of the WCW as it aired just after The Sunday Footy Show
in Melbourne on Channel Nine. It made no sense to me - but the image of
fire works and steroid abusing angry men have been burnt into my brain
ever since.
And the most memorable? Well, there is no doubt about it - pure and simple, The Nature Boy Ric Flair.
For a sport which prides itself on being about masculinity and punishing the weak, Flair was as camp as a forgotten Will & Grace
cast member. Honestly, how often do you see a man smothered in enough
oil to light up a small amish village, who also revels in wearing large
quantities of feathers.
This three disc collection looks back at
the historic career of one of the "sports" most decorated Superstars. A
16-time World Champion, Ric "The Nature Boy" Flair has spent more than
thirty years in the game. This DVD, while unable to capture every
moment, goes a long way to honouring one of the sports pioneers.
What
works about this DVD collection is that it captures some of the sports
most historic rivalries: Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat, 'The American
Dream' Dusty Rhodes, Sting, Harley Race, Terry Funk, Hulk Hogan, Mr
Perfect, Triple H as well as my personal favourite - 'Macho Man' Randy
Savage.
A friend of mine (who should have grown out of the game
by his age) still won't enter a room unless we indulge him in his "Ric
Flair" entrance (in which he burst through the door yelling
"Wooooooooo!") - so for that fact alone, this wrestling DVD seems to
stand up amongst the slew of others getting released.
Fans will
adore it, those unfamiliar with the WWE will simply watch on in
confused awe... but at the end of the day - it's all a bit of good fun.
DVD EXTRAS with Sean Lynch
A
few extras including Ric Flair’s final match at WrestleMania XXIV (as
well as the equally campy and emotional send off he received at WWE Raw
the next night). The upside is there is a good deal of footage that was
never aired on TV - making this even more enticing for the fans.
Conclusion:
Movie 80% Extras: 65%
