His mum (Burstyn) is poorly and so he gladly takes up the
offer of his mate Willie Gutierrez (Phoenix) to see if he
can get a job with businessman uncle Frank Olchin (Caan).
So far so good in the seedy world of the New York subway
railyards where contracts are delivered to the best payers
and trouble strikes rivals very frequently.
It's not long before Leo gets dropped right into the doo-doo
and finds himself not only running from the authorities, but
also his own family as well.
If you throw in family troubles, corruption, rebellious youth,
a nasty outsider and the gorgeous Charlize Theron you should
have a winner. But, unfortunately The Yards wanders
all over without actually going anywhere.
Its 110 minutes is more like 110 hours and, at the end of
the predictable finale, you look at your partner and go "why
the hell did we just watch that?"
Director James Gray also wrote it and what it really needed
was a hard-nosed editor to chop it into shape.
Still, the transfer is okay - it copes well with a lot of
shadows and low-light scenes - and the sound is fine.
I just can't help feeling that The Yards is a waste
of a great cast.
Conclusion: Movie 70%, Extras 65%
