Having found that great truth he modifies his star act into
the body beautiful with muscles twitching in time to music
to a rapturous audience.
His stage productions become more spectacular. He spends
extravagantly on his shows, wives and mistresses and teeters
on the edge of bankruptcy for years. Until the 'Great Depression',
which finishes him.
The Great Ziegfeld is a long movie, too long.
It meanders along taking up too much time on trivia and
then under-developing important dramatic situations. However,
the set, costume, and production design of the musical numbers
are superb.
There are four lovely leading ladies: Myrna Loy, Fanny Brice,
Virginia Bruce and Luise Rainer (who won an Oscar for her
role).
A riveting sequence in the film is the tap dancing routine
performed by Ray Bolger (the scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz).
That alone is almost worth the price of the DVD.
If you are a fan of film musicals select a relaxed time
to view this one, ignore the inadequacies in the script and
enjoy the song and dance.
Conclusion: 85% Extras: 20%.
