Good for Football
Oh
isn't life good? The sun is shining, the birds are singing,
I'm breathing - and Essendon's super team came unstuck in
the Grand Final.
If you remember, a soothsaying Grumpy tipped
the result on Friday and suggested that arrogance would
be a big problem for a side that has dominated over the past
two years.
And so it proved. The red-and-black blokes - who may have
taken the game so lightly they might have played chaps not
100 per cent fit - got caned by a better team on the day.
Good on you Brisbane (Fitzroy) Lions.
Now for any Essendon fan out there who wants to get stuck
into me for my attitude towards the Bombers let me ask this.
Did any Essendon official or player congratulate Brisbane
after the match for winning the game?
Thought not. Seconds after receiving their runners-up medallions,
the Bomber captain James Hird apologised to fans for his side's
poor effort. Not one word about being beaten by a superior
team, or a good-on-you Lions - just a sorry to the club's
fans. Again the arrogance of let's-turn-up-and-we'll-win this.
Yup, they are pretty spewy at Essendon and the comments so
far indicate a bit of a clean out at Windy Hill. That has
to be good for other teams who may be able to pick up some
quality, if over confident, players.
The best thing about Saturday's win, however, is that I haven't
seen one red-and-black scarf anywhere in city streets. It
is very quiet without all those bandwagoners carping on about
what a fantastic team they have.
It also has to be good for global warming because quiet Essendon
fans mean far less hot air being dispensed.
