Police cop it over high-speed chases - yet again

Grumpy Old Coot politically incorrect social commentator and humouristNow the issue of high-speed police chases is a contentious one - my email box usually works overtime after I spout forth over the issue - but we just have to mention it again.

Over the weekend there was another fatal car crash after a police pursuit in country Victoria.

Now I feel for the family of the man who died in the accident, but surely it was his choice to plant his foot after being stopped. His choice to try to evade police and his choice to try to overtake a truck just before he lost control of his car and crashed.

And yet, the poor old coppers are getting it in the neck for doing their jobs.

According to reports the chief of the Jesuit Social Services has got stuck into the police using such great lines as "macho" and prove "manliness to each other".

Bernie Geary is reported as saying police are not backing off chasing because they think it's a weak thing to do.

And Victoria's police minister Andre Haermeyer has bought into the argument saying they'll review chase protocols.

Now I may be old and wrinkly, but once again I think we've got things arse-about face here.

Do the police begin these activities by stealing cars? Or driving dangerously fast? Are the rozzers, who are trained to undertake pursuits, more at fault than the full-of-piss-and-bravado hoon?

And where on earth does the macho come in? Who is trying to be more manly, Bernie - is it the cops, or the young buck who wants to test himself beyond his driving skills and brain power.

Sounds to me like you should pull your head in and stick to dishing out food parcels and providing shelter for the homeless.

And as for your idea that the blue-light boys and gals should just let the petrolheads zoom off at high speed without doing anything "because it's too dangerous" just goes to show that once again people who stick to the law, or those who try to enforce it, are the bad guys in Australia today.

It's never the criminal's fault - probably due to their sad upbringing in a home with only three TVs, or their parents divorced when they were at an impressionable age. The most likely cause is that they are terminally stupid.

When are we going to start the laying the blame at the feet of those responsible for stupid and criminal acts, rather blame every other poor bugger in society.

We are all a pack of bloody sooky wimps and it makes me puke!
