Hypocritical or hyper-critical? .
Why is it that every Monday there is one gem sitting in my
email queue that gets stuck into me over some burbling or
other.
This time around a rather snarky Elizabeth cuffed my ears
over my comments on whether or not Australia should launch
pre-emptive strikes against terror groups in other nations.
She said ...
"Oh my, how lovely and hypocritical you are. So it's
okay for Australia to stand up for itself and strike if it
feels threatened even though there is yet to be a terrorist
attack on our shores.
"However, should Israel make any move against known
terrorist organisations that strike at them almost every week,
you call them bully boys and cowards.
"Oh sorry, that's right, we're the good guys, so
it's okay."
Well, Elizabeth, I took your point and so decided to plonk
myself in a relaxing kero bath in a darkened room and ponder
if I had indeed unleashed the hypocrite within, or whether
there are differences between the two nations.
I must have fallen asleep while musing as I awoke with a
scream and remembered this horrendous image of a sunbathing
Australian (listening to cricket on the radio) being kicked
sick by a mob of turbanned I'Man Over-Laden Bin lookalikes.
They were screaming "We'd don't like your export of
those morons suffering from Ugly Australian Syndrome, your
beer, your like of Americans, or the fact we think of you
as a nation of funlovers and godless creatures."
Hmmmm ... I thought ... they have a point on a couple of
those but, really, what have we done to them?
I must have been overtired - or been listening to Joseph
and the Technicolour Dreamcoat too much as I fell asleep
again and had more dreams.
This time around I was a bulldozer driver on the verge of
retiring. For my entire career I had driven into neighbouring
lands and knocked down the houses of those accused of being
terrorists.
Then I was helicopter pilot firing masses of missiles in
suspected terrorist enclaves - you know the ones near the
schools and hospitals - because my people had been attacked
for some reason.
Next I dreamt I was a government official who allowed settlers
to build houses and communities in the middle of displaced
people who saw this act as a hostile invasion of their penned-in
lands and were driven to terrorism by the apparent and inexorable
grinding of themselves and their futures into the dust of
the Middle East.
Hmmmmm ... I thought ... Israel has every right to blow the
crap out of terrorists who attack its people, but maybe (and
we'll never expect the slightest giving of ground by them
on this) just maybe, their hard-line stands have created generations
of Palestinians who see no point in trying for peace and have
once again taken up the gun and bomb.
Now I may be wrong on this ... but I don't see a lot of similarities
between Australia and Israel on this matter.
And you're right ... we are the good guys!
