Wake Latham's brain by Christmas ...

Grumpy Old Coot politically incorrect social commentator and humourist Now you have to hand it to former bovver and Labor headkicker Mark Latham for taking the political fight up to the Prime Monster Johnno Howard.

Latham has revived an ailing party and come up with a few ideas that - if nothing else - have put a bit of life back into Canberra.

But his idea to bring Australian troops home from Iraq by Christmas seems to be not only being cowardly, but also historically demented.

Spain - of the heroic fighting qualities fame - has chickened out of the coalition in Iraq following the Madrid train bombings. It won't bring their dead back and will not make them any less of a target.

Australia always was going to be a target courtesy of the loonies up north in Indonesia and withdrawing troops will just signal to terrorists they can win by inspiring fear.

They cannot be allowed to and we must make our stand together with other nations who are prepared to fight them.

Now back to my historically demented comment. How many times in history have we heard "The boys will be home by Christmas." Most famously that was used in August 1914 when the British Expeditionary Force headed off to World War One. Four years and a million souls later, the BEF got home for Xmas 1918.

No thanks Latham.
