"The name's Bond. James Bond"
If
there was one man every guy on this earth wants to be - it's him - and
if they say they don't, they're lying. That's right, the buzz is
hotting up around the world for yet another Bond
installment -
number 21 to be precise. But why is there so much hype? What's the big
deal? We go behind the scenes on the latest
007 Blockbuster to find out.
It's a rather brisk day in the beautiful
Bahamas on the set of the latest Bond flick Casino Royale
- the first prequel in the franchise which has existed for more
than two
decades. The last sequences are being shot here (doubling a
Madagascar in the story) before the entire crew move onto a new
dazzling location in Europe, which involves Bond chasing down "Bomber"
played by free runner Sebastien Foucan.
It's all very exciting.
New stories, new Bond girls - and the most significant addition - a new
Bond himself. Not just any new Bond, but the first Blonde Bond. English
born
Daniel Craig has caused quite a bit of fuss with the 007 fans - his
first press appearance caused scandal as Craig complained of sea
sickness after arriving in a speedboat. But, judging by his performance
today, Daniel Craig certainly isn't shaken or stirred by the action
packed sequences which promise to be some of the best Bond stunts put
on film yet.
But what's Casino Royale
all about? Set prior to 1967's Dr. No,
a young James Bond is a new recruit at the MI6 team. He's reckless and
careless and on a mission. After just earning his '00' status with his
first two kills he is sent to the Bahamas where he is to verse Le
Chiffre
in a game of Texas Hold 'Em Poker. Although Bond must ensure that Le
Chiffre's death comes at the hands of his own people. No easy task...
Danish
actor Mads Mikkelsen will take on the role of villain with a scar, Le
Chiffre. Le Chiffre invites the world's best poker players to an
"everything or nothing" high stakes game. Bond, who always loves a
flutter, takes part
in an attempt to bankrupt the terrorist financier.
Also on board
is 48 year-old Isaach de Bankole who has been cast as Obanno. The Ivory
Coast actor recently wrapped the role of Neptune in the upcoming Colin
Farrell action movie Miami Vice.
Along for the ride as always will be the
delightful Dame Judy Dench and the entire production will be helmed by GoldenEye
and Zorro director Martin Campbell, so we expect
excellent pacing. Kill Bill's
Quentin Tarantino has been very vocal about being over-looked for the
job. In fact, Tarantino has made it very clear that it was his idea to
make the Royale prequel. But that's Hollywood.
And
of
course, what would 007 be without his sultry Bond girls? Probably still
very entertaining, but that's besides the point. This time
around we will get to see Italian born Caterina Murino who makes her
first
Hollywood appearance after several years in the Italian limelight.
Talking about her role, Murino said Craig is fantastic in
the role, "You will see a great Bond. He's giving... something
else...to Bond, a different colour that we've never seen before. He's
not only a lover, and elegant, and smiling, he can be very rude. He can
be a very bad man".
Having finished all her scenes - what can we
hope
to expect from her performance? "I'm going to ride my white horse. I
hope it's going to be a beautiful scene with my beautiful white horse.
I'm riding the horse every day here! So hopefully it's going to be good
for the scene." We're intrigued, to say the least.
As
the countdown begins, the hype gets bigger.
Craig looks leaner and meaner than any of his predecessors and this new
007 film is looking to be a much darker take on the often camp
and
humorous franchise, but
will the ardent fans take to it, or will he Craig be regarded as the
new Timothy
Dalton? Let's hope not!
Casino
Royale hits cinemas in Australia December 14th, 2006.
