Jane
(Katherine
Heigl) has spent her whole adult life helping out at other people's
weddings. She's also spent most of her adult life with a massive crush
on her boss (Ed Burns).
So when her model sister breezes
into town and promptly makes a move on Jane's boss (a move that leads
to a proposal) she's in a bit of a rough situation. Things aren't
exactly helped by Kevin (James Marsden), a cynical yet charming
journalist working the weddings beat, who thinks he's found a great
story in Jane and her closet full of 27 bridesmaid dresses.
Okay,
so this is so formulaic they might as well hand you a checklist as you
walk into the cinema so you can cross off the cliches as they
occur:
- Wedding montage set to song? Check.
- Feisty yet slutty best friend? Check.
- Singing together in a bar as a way to show characters falling in
love? Check.
But
somehow it all works, thanks in no small part to the charm and comedy
skills of Heigl. She makes Jane into someone you can believe would be
both lovable and a doormat, someone dying inside for her boss to notice
her yet self-confident enough to give Kevin the brush-off.
And speaking of Kevin, after this and his performance in Enchanted,
Marsden is officially the best romantic leading man in Hollywood today.
This film has its flaws, but seeing these two playing off each other is
just about enough to make you forget them.
