Another
year, another bunch of hits and
misses in the world of cinema. And what a turbulent year it was.
From the triumphant rise of Book adaptions, to the nail in the
coffin for Pauly Shore's career, to the literal nail in the
coffin of some of the world's finest actors and actresses who passed
away.
Whatever way you look at it - 2009 has been an interesting year!
So what better way to celebrate it than to throw away all those "Oscar"
and "Golden Globe" predictions - and give away some awards of our very
own!
Ladies and Gentlemen - we give you the 2nd Annual Wombie Awards...
Voted by some of the best in the business, we talked to professionals
from every walk of entertainment life - writers, directors, sports
stars, critics, comedians, producers and musicians - to let us know
exactly what worked and what didn't at cinemas in 2009.
BEST
MOVIES OF 2009
 |
#1
- The Brothers Bloom
Weisz is amazing (which is huge, as
she usually is quite on the nose), as is Brody in an eccentric little
bundle of joy which most will assume is the scientifically created love
child of Dirty Rotten
Scoundrels , Wes Anderson and Oceans 11.

#2
- Away We Go
Some
movies are just so sweet and endearing they are just destined for cult
status, and Sam Mendes latest sweet ode to romance Away We Go falls
very much in that category.
US
BOX OFFICE : $9.4 MILLION
WORLDWIDE
BOX OFFICE : $9.9 MILLION

#3
- Inglorious Basterds
Presenting
its audience with brutal violence and comic relief, Inglourious Basterds
works in a way that only Tarantino could pull off.
US
BOX OFFICE : $120.8 MILLION
WORLDWIDE
BOX OFFICE : $316.4 MILLION

#4
- District 9
It's Cloverfield
meets Alien
with a dash of Transformers
- the ultimate blockbuster recipe - and is deliciously layered, fresh
and utterly captivating from
beginning to end.
US
BOX OFFICE : $115.6 MILLION
WORLDWIDE
BOX OFFICE : $203.6 MILLION

#5
- Up!
As usual,
Pixar film's are simply miles ahead of anything else currently on
screens - and Up
is miles ahead of most Pixar films... so that's saying something.
US
BOX OFFICE : $292.9 MILLION
WORLDWIDE
BOX OFFICE : $702.7 MILLION

#6
- Milk
Informative, gripping, touchingly
funny, uplifting - and just as
equally dark and heartbreaking - Milk
is not only one of the finest political biopics since JFK, but one of the
finest put to film thus far.
US
BOX OFFICE : $31.8 MILLION
WORLDWIDE
BOX OFFICE : $50.1 MILLION

#7
- Watchmen
As with
most comic book films, once you look past the absurdity
of costumed superheroes (and Dr Manhattan's incessant need to
traverse the Universe with his dong swinging about) Watchmen reveals
itself to be a truly unique and giftedly layered ode to film noir and
the classic Hollywood murder mysteries.
US
BOX OFFICE : $107.5 MILLION
WORLDWIDE
BOX OFFICE : $183.8 MILLION

#8
- 500 Days Of Summer
There
is a light touch to events (a dance number is a highlight) and the
occasional shifts in time serve to highlight the roller-coaster nature
of a relationship's early days and how jokes can go stale over
time
US
BOX OFFICE : $32.3 MILLION
WORLDWIDE
BOX OFFICE : $57 MILLION

#9
- The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus
The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus
is not for everyone. It's an odd beast at the best of times and never
quite gives the definitive answers you may seek, which will leave even
the most open minded of film-goers slightly befuddled.
However, give it a chance, because if you are one of the
lucky ones who "gets it" (or, at the very least, most of
it)... The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus will
positively blow your mind.

BOX OFFICE : TBA
WORLDWIDE
BOX OFFICE : $23.7 MILLION

#10
- Sherlock Holmes
For
the most part the story gives the cast plenty of space to be charming
while providing a number of moderately interesting mysteries for Holmes
to tackle in between dodging explosions and getting into punch-ups.
