Blue Crush

Review by Clint Morris

Like a well-worn surfboard smothered in a new coat of Beewild Wax, John Stockwell’s Blue Crush takes an old theme and spruces it up with some exhilarating razzle-dazzle, surf style. Stunts, Songs and Starlets ensue.

Said to be the biggest-budget surf movie in history, Blue Crush offers audiences some amazing shots of killer Hawaiian waves curling perfectly, then smashing down on coral – and coupled with a reasonably resolute underdog storyline, the studio may have themselves a winner.

Inspired by writer Susan Orlean's article, The Girls of Maui, the film stars Kate Bosworth as Anne Marie, a young woman who dreams of winning the exalted Pipe Masters surf competition.

But before she even has the chance to show the world what she’s got, she’s got a routine life to deal with – which includes playing guardian to her younger sister – because mum’s taken off – and working as a chambermaid in a luxury hotel.

Thankfully her best friends, Eden (Michelle Rodriguez) and Lena (Sanoe Lake) work there too, so hijinks always take her mind off her problems.

Matt (Mathew Davis) could be the shining light in all this. He’s a pro footballer, who suddenly arrives on the scene offering Anne Marie sumly amounts to teach him how to Surf – and before too long offers her the key to his wholesome heart. Hopefully he’ll still be standing by her side when she gets a chance to win the Pipe masters.

Kate Bosworth’s got what it takes to be a star in the making, and this is a nice piece for her to parade her ability. It unfortunately can’t be said for a lot of the co-stars – Davis and Rodriguez especially – who’ve got little to do than sit around, smile, don Speedos and flash their pearly whites.

If you’ve come to Blue Crush looking for a stellar story, you’ve picked the wrong flick. Not that this movie doesn’t have a half decent plot, but the fact of the matter is it’s more a couple of hours of surf stunts than anything. Even that, though, is worth the price of admission alone.

If you can forget the fact that it isn’t actually Bosworth riding the waves – her head has been superimposed onto real-surfers bodies – you should have a great time watching the admirable action this bubbly bathe has in store.
