Yes,
it's true - everyone's favourite Khasiksthanian superstar is making his
way to the big screen very soon. And judging by the latest reports, it
could very well surpass the man who introduced us to him in the first
place, Ali G, as the world's most outrageous character. Get ready for
it world, because Borat his headed for the silver
screen!
The brain child of British comedian Sacha
Baron Cohen - who rose to fame in the early part of the new millennium
with his cult Da Ali G Show, which stemmed from his
brief appearances on The Eleven O'Clock Show
as the infamous alter ego "Voice of the Youth" - Ali G. Becoming one of
the most talked about comedies in years, the phrase "Boyacasha" was
even entered into the dictionary, took the UK by storm. And before too
long, the world.
The premise is simple enough, Borat Sagdiyev
(Kazakhstan's sixth most famous man and a leading journalist from the
State run TV network) travels from his home in Kazakhstan to the U.S.
to make a documentary. On his cross-country road-trip, Borat meets real
people in real situations with hysterical consequences.
His first film Ali G Inda
House
was met with mixed reviews (although it took in almost double it's $5
million budget at the UK Box Office alone) - many believing it didn't
stay true to the shows origins and comedy stylings. However, with his
latest big screen venture - that of Ali G Show regular Borat, Cohen
seems intent on, as he's always promised, "keepin' it real".
Enlisting the services of the Emmy Award
winning Seinfeld and Curb
Your Enthusiasm
creator, Larry Charles, as director - the film is set to take a much
more of a "mockumentary" style, similar to that which appears on Ali G.
Charles and Cohen have opted for the the format of the film to be a
blend between narrative and real footage. However audiences may find it
difficult to tell which parts are real and which staged, yet another
beauty of the Curb Your Enthusiasm style of
film-making.
In
what is set to be one of the most hilariously offensive movies of the
year (preview screenings have already mentioned the film to be
extremely crude with multiple full frontal male nudity shots and
numerous
antisemitism jokes) one can't help but wonder - what can't Cohen do! In
fact, following it's debut at the US Box Office, Universal Studios have
already announced that Cohen has signed a $45 million deal to make a
follow up film starring another Ali G spin-off,
with German fashion stylist character Bruno.
Both Cohen and Charles are of
Jewish decent, and one can't help but think
that those who aren't in on the joke are going to blow up quite a bit
of a fuss over this one. Cohen has in the past had to defend his
character's racist nature by stating that the character is a "dramatic
demonstration of how racism feeds on dumb conformity, as much as rabid
bigotry," rather than a display of racism by Baron Cohen himself.
Nonetheless, the Anti-Defamation League, a
prominent Jewish anti-racism group, complained to HBO (which airs Da
Ali G Show
in the US) after Borat performed a Country and Western song that called
on people to 'throw the Jew down the well', warning them that 'you must
be careful of his teeth' and that 'you must grab him by his money' (The
full chorus is: "Throw the Jew down the well, so my country can be
free, you must grab him by his horns, then we have a big party"), to
applause and participation from an audience in Tucson, Arizona.
Most recently, his appearance as host of the
2005 European MTV Awards
caused major stirs - at first greeting the audience by
saying:
"Welcome to the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest," and later referring to
Madonna, he said: "It was very courageous of MTV to start the show with
a genuine transvestite."
Needless to say, you will either walk away
in disgust from this film - or you may very well knock Anchorman
from the top of your DVD pile to replace this as the "Wet
Your
Pants" movie of the upcoming year. Not surprisingly, one of the other
big comedy films of the year - Ferrell's Anchorman
follow up Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
also stars Cohen as Jean Girard, Ricky Bobby's arch-enemy.
So get ready comedy lovers, as we are about
to embark on the next generation of comedy on the big screen - and Borat
is standing on the front line.
