Club Dread

Review by Clint Morris

Club DreadThe second major film from comedy troupe Broken Lizard, centres on a self-gratifying resort for Swingers in Costa Rica where the clientele are speedily being chopped up by a Jason Voorhees-like killer on the loose.

Who could it be? Who’s next? And who’s the lucky guy smack bang in the middle of a threesome?

The anticipated follow-up from the witty troupe that bought us Super Troopers? Or a remake of I Still Know what you did Last Summer? Hard to tell.

Comedy troupe Broken Lizard would have you believe it’s the former and perceptibly just as inspired, imaginative and fun as their Canadian Cop Comedy from a couple of years back. Unfortunately, there’s not an ounce of giggle to be had here - questioning whether anyone actually intended it to be a comedy or a tribute to Gus Van Sant and his penchant for frame by frame colour remakes of horror films.

If its satire, it’s without reference, if its comedy, it’s without laughs and if it’s a film, it’s without thought.

In a recent interview, director and cast member Jay Chandrasekhar mentioned that he’s never seen any of the Scary Movie movies. Now how obvious is that? If he had, he’d have realised that he’s definitely missed the boat on giving the horror genre a good ribbing.

And if it wasn’t intended to do that – rib the genre – but simply make something that plays out semi-seriously, then the question is “Why”? What’s the impetus for that? It’s not scary, it’s not funny, it’s not really anything…

In some respects, it looks like an excuse for the comedy gang and co-stars Bill Paxton and Brittany Daniel to snag some money off Fox Searchlight and have an Island holiday for a couple of weeks.

Club Dread is watchable – the lovely Daniel helps keep peepers on the screen – but then again so is a dire church choir on the sub-zero opening night of a Christmas pantomime.

Now how about that Super Troopers prequel?
