THE DARK KNIGHT :BOX OFFICE GOES BATTY FOR BATMAN
Australian audiences flocked to see the action blockbuster The Dark Knight at cinemas this weekend, making it Australia’s number one film at the box office.
On 472 screens nationally The Dark Knight
took a smashing $11,779,716 over the weekend (Thursday–Sunday
inclusive) to become the biggest opening of the year, surpassing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($9,733,329) and I Am Legend ($9,513,911).
Since
opening day on Wednesday July 16, the film has now taken a total of
$14,057,430 over its first five days. By comparison Spider-Man grossed $13,009,000 for its five-day opening weekend over the Queen's Birthday weekend in 2002.
In the United States, The Dark Knight
broke all previous records to take the title of biggest ever opening
day (US$67.8 million) and biggest ever three-day opening weekend
(US$155.4 million), which surpassed the previous record holder, Spider-Man 3 which earned US$151.1 million when it released in May 2007. Back To Box Office
