My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Review by Clint Morris
Everyones
had a run-in with a girlfriend or boyfriends parent.
Youre either not good enough for their son/daughter,
dont have a stable enough job, fat-enough bank account
or belong to a different religion.
In Joel Swicks madcap comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding,
you too will realise youve had it pretty good when compared
to the young man in this film, who suddenly has to deal with
his Greek girlfriends boisterous, ultimately extremely
disapproving family of thousands.
Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) hasnt got much of a
purpose in life. Most of its dictated by her Greek heritage,
which has decided her only purpose in life will be to marry
a nice Greek man and bear his many children.
Infuriated that her father wont let her be her own
person, and sick to death of working in the family restaurant,
Toula breaks free, ditching her frumpy wardrobe, replacing
her glasses with contact lenses and scoring herself a more
rewarding job.
But it seems that is only the beginning of a series of shocks
for her family...
Ian Miller (John Corbett) is as non-Greek as they come. After
walking past Toulas work, admiring her from a far, he
finally decides to walk into the shop and ask her out. Toula
reluctantly agrees, but knowing very well her family is going
to be up in arms over her decision to date someone American.
As embellished and uproarious as Zwicks film is, My
Big Fat Greek Wedding is also a great excuse to check
out the beliefs and diversity of different nationalities.
When Ian and Toula announce their engagement, the hilarity
really kicks in as Toulas family, in particular her
dominating father, Gus (Michael Constantine), struggle to
cope with the new foreigner in the family.
And, as much as Ian tries to fit into the clique, he constantly
has to get his head around some wild beliefs and habitual
zany Greek behaviour.
Featuring a stupendous line-up of players including
Australias Gia Carides and Louis Mandylor My
Big Fat Greek Wedding is a spot-on re-creation of opposites
attracting, whilst serving up some of the funniest moments
the screen has seen In a long time.
