Fired Up
Review
by Anthony Morris
There are very, very few genres that can make it to
the big screen without the help of big names or big special
effects.
If you want to
make a traditional action movie or romantic comedy, you need to hook a
big name or you are looking at a trip straight to the DVD
shelves.
But one of the
genres that does seem to qualify for big screen presentation without
the names or the explosions is the cheerleader genre.
Or at least, judging by Fired
Up, it does because cheerleading aside this is exactly the
kind of no-name stars teen sex (without any actual sex) romp that
typically goes direct to the DVD shelves.
Where, to be
fair, it would be a pleasant surprise, because this is a well-made,
occasionally funny, mostly entertaining no-name stars teen sex
romp...
And even the
no-name stars bit is a little harsh because the female lead (Sarah
Roemer) was in Disturbia
and the blonde one of the buddy duo (Eric Christian Olsen) has been
around since at least Not
Another Teen Movie.
Ironically - he
played the guy who was clearly too old to be playing a
teenager.
And that was
close to a decade ago...
Anyway, the
story is kind of silly but somehow works because it doesn't take itself
too seriously.
High school
girl-chasers extrodinaire Shaun (Nicolas D’Agosto) and Nick (Olsen)
decide that they have scored all the girls they are going to get from
being football stars and decide to blow off football camp to join the
cheerleading team at their no-doubt babe-filled camp.
There they score
a-plenty until Shaun falls for his team's chief cheerleader (Roemer)
and falls afoul of her douchebag boyfriend, while Nick... well, he just
scores a-plenty.
Will their team
pull off the deadly "Fountain of Troy" manoeuvre and win the
tournament?
Will Nick score
with the coach's hot wife?
Will they show a
full episode of TV show Bikini Scientist?
Why wasn't this
movie called "Heartless Boob-Grabbers"?
How many times
can Shaun say "you've got to risk it to get the
biscuit"?
Where did they
find that song where the UK girl sings "stop being a
dickhead"?
Watch and find
out... Or wait for DVD, your choice.
