Hollywood Homicide
Review by Clint Morris
Harrison
Ford looks really lost in Hollywood Homicide. Not only
does he seem to be sleepwalking through his pretty humdrum
role of an LAPD Officer moonlighting as a real-estate agent,
but he just seems pretty unenthused with the whole deal.
And who can blame him? The one time king of action-adventure
cinema hasn't had it easy the last few years.
His last three or four films have been box office disasters,
and the grey on top of his cranium isn't going to get him
get him anything much better anytime soon.
And, although Hollywood Homicide is a much more pleasurable
film than his last couple, it's still a reprehensible day
for the powerhouse that is Harrison Ford. Han Solo would have
offloaded the script for this thing first round in a poker
match with Lando...
Hollywood Homicide throws veteran cop Harrison Ford
and spring chicken Josh Hartnett together, as the two try
to crack a murder that occurred in a hip hop club.
But in between trying to work out who the perpetrator is,
wise Joe Gavilan [Ford] is trying to carve out a second career
for himself selling real-estate, and K. C. Calden [Hartnett]
is re-thinking his career as a cop, instead concentrating
on an acting career.
Something just reeks of desperation and formula here. You've
seen the buddy-cop movie done plenty of times before [and
a hundred times better], and it's not done much righteousness
here, but the biggest problem with director Ron Shelton's
film is that everyone's trying a little too hard.
The jokes fall flat [Ford looks out of his place], the script's
as generic as vanilla ice-cream and besides a pretty nice
car chase near the end of the film, there's not a lot to see.
It's essentially, what Bad Boys would look like come
sequel number four.
But having said that, if you're a Harrison Ford fan, you'll
enjoy this a little more than his previous efforts of late
[prominently K:19 - The Widowmaker] and this character
is at least a little more suited to something you'd rather
see him playing.
Secondly, and thankfully - because if it hadn't I'd be truly
savaged - the film doesn't take itself at all seriously.
But, for ageing Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones 4 couldn't
come any sooner. And Josh Hartnett, heck man, passing on Superman
is proving to be a bad move pal.
