The Hot Chick

Review by Clint Morris

In the late 80’s, a trend occurred in Hollywood with the ‘body switching’ movies.

Kids were changing bodies with their Dad’s (Vice Versa, Like Father Like Son), adolescents malformed into older versions of themselves (Big), and a couple of times, men changed into women and vice versa (Just One of the Guys, Dating the Enemy).

Now, some ten years after we assumed the regurgitated pattern had been burnt to a brittle, Rob Schneider (Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, The Animal), brings it back, in the form of the pertinently titled The Hot Chick.

The story is as follows: A beautiful and popular cheerleader gets her just desserts when she’s transformed into a man (enter Schneider) in his 30’s.

While avoiding the advances of her best friend (Anna Faris), trying to win her boyfriend back (Matthew Lawrence) and hopefully winning the Cheerleading competition, she/he must work out a way to return to her previous body – but not before a lesson has been taught about being vindictive to others.

Schenider’s comedies of late have been a little hit or miss. His Deuce Bigalow venture was his optimum moment in the genre to date, but his last effort, The Animal, an absolute stinker. Mercifully, thanks to a spirited script, bubbly supporting cast and brisk pace, his latest film – though typically immature – is a return to form.

As close too it, anyway...

There’s something incontrovertibly fun about these body-switching comedies, and Schneider really works it. Though not for the lily-livered, some of the scenes are hysterically mirthful and the central band of players lusciously top rate.

Anna Faris (Scary Movie) proves herself a proficient comedienne in the role of the best friend, while producer Adam Sandler will get laughs, cameo-ing as a bongo-playing weed smoker.

If you’re not a fan of jokes about farting, urine, gender, homosexuality, or are easily offended by over - exaggerated stereotypes – this isn’t the movie for you.

But, if you’re prepared to kick back and watch something incontestably humorous for an hour or so – without being affronted - do yourself a favour. The Hot Chick strides with vivacious energy and sidesplitting laughs from start to finish.
