Into The Blue
Review by Adam Weeks
It’s easy for the average armchair critic
to dismiss a film like Into The Blue. After all, it
is just a bit of mindless entertainment, right?
Well, that’s the whole point folks, but as
long as that “entertainment” part is in there , it’s all right with me,
and Into The Blue certainly is entertaining.
I wasn’t actually sure of what to expect
when I stepped into the theatre to see this one. The previews make it
look a little bit National Treasure, a little bit Fast
& The Furious and a little bit half naked girlies
frolicking under water. And to tell the truth, that’s not a bad
description of the events that play out over the course of two hours.
Jared (Paul Walker) and Sam (Jessica Alba)
play a happy couple living the (semi) good life in the Bahamas; he’s a
Scuba instructor part-time treasure hunter, she’s a … well, girlfriend.
After losing his latest job, and knocking
back a fresh job offer from his old employer/competitor, Bates (Josh
Brolin), the twosome decide to spend a fun couple of weeks with Jared’s
brother Bryce (Scott Caan), along with his new girlfriend Amanda
(Ashley Scott), drinking Corona and exploring the ocean floor.
When the gang comes across some old bits and
pieces of treasure belonging to a long sought-after shipwreck, they
realise that their lack of money and equipment means that they will
probably end up losing their find to their old buddy Bates, that is
until they come across a crashed airplane with a couple of million
dollars worth of Cocaine in the cargo hold…
Sound flimsy? Yeah, I’m the first to admit
that it is, but that comes with a big but… It’s fun! It’s a simple and
effortless film, and it certainly helps that the cast are just so damn
good looking!
Jessica Alba, fresh off of her turns in Sin
City and Fantastic 4 is really given not
much more to do than wear teeny-tiny little bikinis and occasionally
shed a tear and Ashley Scott, who you would more than likely remember
from Walking Tall, gets to do much the same – not
that I would even consider complaining about that for a second.
The ladies need not feel left out though,
Paul Walker only wears a tee-shirt for around 30 seconds of the film,
and Scott Caan joins in the fun as well. Good for the eyes, no matter
what floats your boat (so to speak). However, that’s not even
mentioning the gorgeous backdrop of the tropics. I’ll be thinking of
crystal blue water, sandy beaches, Jessica Alba and Ashley Scott for a
while to come.
It’s as lightweight as they come,
undeniably, but if you want a fun film to spend an evening with your
buddies or your partner, Into The Blue will suit
you down to a tee, if you want Oscar-worthy material, chances are you
wouldn’t even be reading this, so just have a good time with it!
