You've got to hand it to Adam Sandler, he knows what works and he
does it well. Now, while "what works" may not please everyone - it's
certainly proved to be a healthy cash cow for a man whose SNL schitck included childish jibberish and not much else.
Needless to say, if you've seen anything Sandler has produced in the last decade, you know exactly what Just Go With It has to offer and will be satisfied or dissatisfied accordingly.
Once
again, we head off to a holiday destination (Sandler's worked out that
he can have a holiday while making millions... and why wouldn't you) as
Just Go With It follows the
tale of a plastic surgeon - a serial romancer who uses a wedding ring
to lure ladies - who thinks he's finally met the girl he can settle
down with.
The girl, of course, is a much younger -
insanely hot - schoolteacher. However, she thinks he is married... so
instead of telling the truth he enlists his loyal assistant (the
equally hot Jenifer Aniston) to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife,
in order to cover up a careless lie.
When more lies backfire,
the assistant's kids become involved, and everyone heads off for a
weekend in Hawaii that will "change all their lives forever".
There
really is no need to go to Hawaii, but there is something about the
escapism that the setting provides that adds even more likeabilty to
what is already a rock solid formula for enjoyable popcorn cinema that
never really challenges the brain (and doesn't intend to either).
The
cast is excellent, with Sandler delivering more of the same (again, not
a bad thing if you're a fan), while Aniston supplies a sturdy
performance in the "straight woman" role while still delivering some of
the finest eye candy you are likely to see in 2011.
Nick Swardson and the little kids are the biggest surprises here, often supplying more laughs than the leads. Sadly,
Nicole Kidman's surprise pop in does little to change audiences
perception of her. It's clearly her attempt at a "Tom Cruise in Tropic
Thunder" comeback... but she struggles to compete with the clearly more
talented surrounding cast (who can move their faces).
As Sandler
films go, it's one of the better ones of the last few years - as
romantic comedies go, it's much more fun than anything Katherine Heigl
has vomited out lately... as cinematic eye candy for the lads goes....
it's perfection.
