There are two kinds of people in this world : people who wouldn't go
to a Justin Bieber concert movie if you simultaneously paid them and
dragged them, and people who have already seen it at least once.
So
this review is aimed largely at those in the "no thanks" category,
because despite what you think - and to be honest, only knowing Bieber
and his work by reputation, I shared many of your concerns - Justin Bieber : Never Say Never is actually a pretty decent concert film.
There's
a few different story threads going on to keep things moving around the
concert performances (which are spread out throughout the film, and are
for the most part the only 3D footage), and they all work fine.
There's
the history of Bieber, which is actually pretty interesting - single
mum, always had an impressive talent for music, was discovered via
clips on YouTube, and so on.
There's the scenes meant to show
us he's a normal guy, which are interesting for the way they tell us
nothing about Bieber apart from he likes basketball and messes around a
bit.
Occasionally famous people turn up (Usher, Snoop Dog, one
of Will Smith's sons), there's a brief moment of drama when it looks
like Bieber's voice won't last until the big Madison Square Garden
concert.
There's also a sly sense of humour running throughout
that gives the impression that while Bieber and company are all total
professionals, they're not taking his sappy mix of teen schmaltz and
"Non-Threatening Boy" appeal as seriously as they could.
To
wit : the moment where Bieber slowly flicks his fringe out at us in 3D
while "At Last, My Love Has Come Along" plays is pretty much a shoo-in
for movie moment of 2001.
Seriously, fan or not. it's that amazing. 3.5 out
of 5
