Legally Blonde 2
Review by Clint Morris
Who'd
have thought dressing in off-the-wall attire, spitting a lot
of new-age yak and stomping on the condescending foe would
be the recipe for success?
But Legally Blonde, which starred Reese Witherspoon
as a brainy blonde who takes her smorgasbord of hair accessories
and hundred suitcases to law school, was more than just that
- it was a minor powerhouse, cementing Witherspoon's future
as a Hollywood "Miss" to be reckoned with, and proving
even the thinnest of ideas can sometimes be more alluring
than the crammed.
And although Legally Blonde 2 doesn't play as fresh
or as funny, as a follow-up it's not too bad.
Elle Woods is again, the 'fish out of water', when she lands
a new job at Washington, hoping to convince the bigwigs that
testing on animals isn't the thing to do.
Of course, she comes to loggerheads with a couple of supercilious
adversaries, and gets some remote assistance from those she
least expected to reach out their hand.
Like the first film, it's the wonderful Witherspoon who makes
the film work as well it does. Her vibrant, comical performance
keeps the film chugging well after you've realised the film's
no more than a Xeroxed copy of the first film - with a new
painted backdrop.
Bob Newhart as is also quite endearing in his second-fiddle
part as a doorman who knows a thing or two about Congress,
while it's good see Sally Field back playing a meaty-size
role.
Legally Blonde 2 plays a bit anachronistic, but if
you're a sixteen year old girl, you'll probably think you've
nodded off into some gobsmacking reverie.
