Old School
Review by Clint Morris
Ever
wonder what happened to the unripe college kids of such screwball
efforts as Porky's, Revenge of the Nerds or
Animal House?
No we haven't either - but just in case, director Todd Phillips
offers an answer, Old School, a typically inane comedy
about three matured friends with an urge to live the high
- and loose - life once again.
When 30-year-old Mitch (Luke Wilson) catches his girlfriend
(Juliette Lewis) half way into a gangbang at their family
home, he packs his bags and heads for new pastures.
What he comes up with is a house neighbouring the local college,
which pretty soon - as suggested by buddies Frank (Will Ferrell)
and Beanie (Vince Vaughn) - will become the definitive party
station, complete with bong-smoking, keg-guzzling, Snoop Dogg
listening college kids.
But to avoid losing his lease, Mitch must form a fraternity
populated by a crew of misfits, which include 90-year-old
Blue (Patrick Cranshaw) and 400-pound Weensie (Jerod Mixon),
and suddenly his house takes on an all-new principle.
With such a great cast of comedic and non-comedic actors
one would have hoped for much more out of Old School
.
Sure, there's a laugh here and there - namely due to the
presence of Will Ferrell - but all in all it's a misfired
stab at reigniting the college comedies of the early 80's,
complete with the unnecessary nudity, smut and language that
made those films a staple of the bottom shelf at the video
library.
If you were a fan of director Phillips' previous film, Road
Trip, you might again get something out of this juvenile
concoction. But anyone else might want to wait till it hits
free to air television...
After all, cinema admission is far too expensive for one
or two funny gags and a misfiring one about KY Jelly, a geriatric
and two shirtless beauties.
