Scary Movie 3
Review by Clint Morris
The
first flick was about ribbing horror flicks. The second satirised
supernatural movies.
And now, creepy, science fiction blockbusters like The
Ring and Signs are the centre of a good jesting.
And from the elongated 8 Mile spoof that occupies
most of the first half of the flick to the 'Alien Invasion'
element that gives the aforesaid Mel Gibson number a kidding
poke near the end, its evident all bases have been covered
in Scary Movie 3.
And again, no one goes home without a good mocking. But whether
it’s done well or not doesn’t seem to be of any
concern...
The Scary Movie movies aren’t great. Never were.
In fact, the first film – a spoof of the horror films
at the time, notably Scream – was good, but hardly
deserved the riches it made internationally.
The second, Scary Movie 2, well, that didn’t
even deserve a release at all. Filled with the kind of smutty
jokes that even the frat houses would turn their nose up at,
it’ll go down in history as one heck of a stinky sequel.
Having said that, you wouldn’t think studio and audience
alike would demand another?
Scary Movie 3 is quite a different film to the first
two – a direct approach to inject something fresh into
the series perhaps? But it’s not different in a good
way, just in an observant sense.
Less lewd, and more PG style sight-gag humour [rather than
the 'dick in the ear' jokes that the others were so renowned
for], the film brings back to the arena the accomplished rib-master
David Zucker, whose hits Flying High and The Naked
Gun will forever go down as genre highlights.
And while some – namely parents who aren’t too
fond of their kids watching this series – will welcome
the change of guard, no one will be able to argue that this
is a pretty lackluster effort from someone whose proved in
the past that he can cut a good laugh or two.
There are three or four good gags here [particular near the
end, with the Signs spoof] but there’s still no
disguising this is more or less a series of unfunny mock-up’s
stitched together like left-over material on a rundown quilt.
The only cast members to return from the first films are
Regina King and Anna Faris, whose role as Cindy Campbell was
almost a necessity, of the film was going to carry the same
title as the previous films.
The rest of the cast are mainly made up out of folks that
have either worked with the Zucker gang before – i.e.
Charlie Sheen and Leslie Nielsen – or familiar faces
like Pam Anderson, Jenny McCarthy, Queen Latifah, Denise Richards
and Anthony Anderson, who smell more of studio suggestion
than inspired pluckings.
It’s evident that the Scary Movie series has
finally run its course – most will say the novelty wore
off after the first movie – but Hollywood just obviously
doesn’t care: They’ve just greenlit Scary Movie
4.
Hopefully next time – isn’t that distressing? –
they’ll remember the laugh machine and not worry so much
about great set dressing and costumes, which someone’s
wrongly informed the studio are more crucial than a giggling
audience.
