Shine a Light
Review

Concert
films only look
like they're all the same. In a field that's pretty much exploded over
the last five years thanks to the rise of DVDs (and the decline of
CDs), there's still a world of difference between a concert that's been
recorded by cameras and one that's been filmed.
So for a few people out there the real draw for Shine a Light isn't
that it's a Rolling Stones concert film, but that it's a Rolling Stones
concert (actually, two concerts edited together) that's been filmed by
Martin Scorsese.
And you won't forget that it's been filmed: Scorsese edits like crazy
(he had eighteen cameras to choose from) to create a rapid-fire
experience, which might be a bit too much to stand for those who prefer
to actually take the time to study a musician while they
perform.
And some of the close-ups can be a little unsettling too: no-one really
needs to see Keith Richards face blown up to the size of a house.
The set list is a mix of the expected and forgotten numbers from the
Stones' massive back catalogue, with a couple of guest appearances
(Jack White, Christina Aguilera, blue legend Buddy Guy) on-stage and a
cameo from Bill Clinton (the concerts were benefits for the Clinton
Foundation) off it.
There are a few old interview clips (mostly designed to shock - Mick
& Co look so young) but otherwise it's all music all the time
and sound-wise it's quite the experience.
Visually though, in trying to match the music the rapid editing takes
away more than it adds.
