In
a year that has seen a comparable number of films disappoint to the
amount
of times Robert Downey Jnr has been busted under the influence (read: a
lot), it's encouraging to know that there is
at least one franchise on it's way which may very well deliver the
goods to the name "trilogy".
That's right, the third
installment in the Sam Raimi helmed Spider-Man
series is set to hit theatres around the world on May the
7th, 2007. And with
an estimated budget nearing the 300 million dollar mark (keep in mind,
this includes the costs of the massive advertising campaign that will
be
involved) Sony can't afford to fail.
It
will also make it the most
expensive film ever made in non-adjusted U.S. dollars, breaking King
Kong's record budget of $207 million.
But
let's face it - you'd be fairly confident when the release date for the
film was set before Spider-Man 2 was even released.
And
if the massive opening of X-Men III (over $100
million) is anything to go by, one should never let a
satisfying movie get in the way of profit.
This
third installment of director Sam Raimi's hugely successful
series finds the
webbed super hero (Tobey Maguire, donning the suit again - thankfully
this franchise isn't doing a Batman with a
musical chairs
game with lead actors) and his girlfriend, Mary Jane (Kirsten
Dunst)
embroiled in a passionate love triangle while confronting a new slate
of dastardly
villains including The Sandman, a renewed Green Goblin.
And
there's also rumblings of the demonic Venom
also making his franchise debut. Which is pretty cool, as anyone who
knows their comics will know exactly what Venom is capable of...
James
Franco, Dylan Baker, Stan
Lee (in a quick cameo) and J.K. Simmons are the confirmed returning
cast members from the previous two Spider-Man
movies, with Thomas Haden Church joining the gang as Flint
Marko/Sandman and That 70's Show's Topher
Grace on board as Eddie Brock/Venom.
Raimi was
recently quoted as saying that "...Spider-Man
will face double the trouble in our next film and I couldn't be more
excited about the direction we are taking Peter Parker and the
franchise...[Also] Topher Grace is an extraordinarily talented actor
and will be perfect for the complexities of the role we are developing
[for him]."
Will
there be a spin-off Venom movie for Topher Grace? Early reports suggest
his turn in this movie is remarkable, and if the critics like his work,
he could be donning more super hero/villain outfits in the near future.
Raimi
has also let slip that both
villains would involve massive, state of the art CGI. In fact, in a
recent interview he noted that the film might have been released in
2006 were it not for the tremendous amount of post-production work
needed to perfect the CGI. Hey, as long as it's more believable than Poseidon
or parts of Kong, take as long as you need Sammy!
At
a recent press conference, Kirsten Dunst claimed that there would be
"two and a half bad guys," and that one of them would be "resurrected"
which suggests that perhaps the Green Goblin (in some form - possibly a
role to be taken by James Franco as The Hob Goblin) would return for
the third film. However, Sam Raimi recently suggested that this movie
is
likely to stray away the most from the traditional comic books, with
the
possibility that Franco may not become a super villain at all.
Rumors
doing the rounds have Harry becoming a "Good Goblin" in
this film,
which would certainly make for an interesting theme of redemption. The
idea firmed after Franco
recently suggested that this will be the last Spider-Man
movie his character will be in (and also that dramatic crash into the
wall as seen briefly in the latest trailer).
One
member of the team that will not be returning is composer Danny Elfman (Big
Fish, The Simpsons), who has confirmed he will not be back
for Spider-Man III, in part due to difficulties
with Raimi, as well as the clash of schedules working on Charlotte's Web
(starring Dakota Fanning and filmed in Heidelberg in Melbourne,
Australia). The film will now be scored by Christopher Young (The
Grudge, Swordfish), with Elfman's theme to be adapted.
With
filming in New York having started on May 26th (2006) there is still
some time
to go - but if the buzz is anything to go by, this could be a huge
movie, perhaps the biggest grossing of all time!! More bums on seats
than any other? It's highly likely.
And what of the
black suit? Well, you'd be correct in thinking that's it's not
a black and white photo! Sony has
confirmed that this is the latest suit, which hints at the introduction
of Venom - or the less likely concept of a Superman III
style "Good and Evil" Spider-Man.
But
let's face it, as long as the words "Da Vinci" or "Code" aren't
mentioned once throughout the movie, we should all be
very happy movie goers when this one hits the cinemaplexes in
2007.
