Tangled takes a while to
get started, but once this animated Disney take on the Rapunzel story
(you know, "let down your hair") gets going, you know you're in for
something special. But first, backstory...
Here
Rapunzel (the voice of Mandy Moore) is the daughter of a princess who's
mother was saved in childbirth by a magic flower. The
flower's previous evil owner (Donna Murphy) had been using it to stay
forever young, and it turns out Rapunzel's hair can do the same trick
for her as the flower did - so long as her hair is never cut. Rapunzel
is kidnapped (remember, cutting the hair makes it useless), spends the
next eighteen‑odd years hidden in a tower, and by the time professional
thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) turns up looking for a hideout she's
all set to bust out and see the world - or at least, she thinks she
is... The story is straightforward and the songs are fun
rather than anything really special, but the many, many little touches
(this is surprisingly funny) quickly add up to something with real
charm. Rapunzel is especially well‑drawn, and not just in
an animation sense (though the stylized CGI here is very impressive -
the acting from one particular horse is brilliant stuff). She's completely convincing as a sheltered girl who overcomes her upbringing to see the world. She - and Tangled - will win you over. 4 out
