Hollywood loves a remake, fans not so much. However, no matter how hard we rally against the bastardisation of the classics, there is something inside of us all that will still trick ourselves into going to watch the newer versions "just to see what it's like".
Why we put ourselves through such pain I'll never know, it's sort of like picking a scab. You know it's bad for you, and it'll mean another one will pop up, but you'll endulge the pain anyway.
So here it is, another remake of a classic lo-fi horror flick. Part of the appeal of old school horror movies is just how dodgy they are. They are sick and perverted in a humerous way, whereas these days the violence is so sadistic and realistic it's not so much a pleasure to watch as it is a chore. You have to endure the violence as opposed to revel in it's outrageousness.
None the less, Sam Raimi (the man behind the original trilogy) has had quite a lot of involvement in this reboot, an Evil Dead for a new generation, so while it may never be what it was - it at least has the blessing of the originator!
The story is pretty much the same this time around : Mia, a young woman struggling with sobriety, heads to a remote cabin with her brother and a group of friends, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads to danger and horror.
The trailer hints at references to the original films (tree rape, etc) but it just raises a similar question we all asked when Total Recall V2.0 hit cineams... if your most exciting moments are references to the original... why don't we just watch the original?
For those who have forgotten Sam Raimi's classic trilogy, we've included the trailers for them below. Let's see which one you prefer!
