Oblivion
Sneak Peek at "Oblivion"
It's almost [mission] impossible to think that just over five years ago, around the time of the "couch jumping" incident, that Tom Cruise's career was on such a slide that movie studios that had long been in his corner we distancing themselves from him, talks of a Mission Impossible "changing of the guard" and people had lost faith in him.
So, after the misstep that was Knight And Day, it's great to see Cruise back on top - after all, he is one of the very few genuine movie stars we actually have anymore. A star in the truest sense : a name that can pull in crowds and epitomises the idea of a big screen hero.
Along with the game changing M:i4 and Jack Reacher - Cruise has got another surefire hit on his hands in Oblivion.
Oblivion looks like the very essence of an original and groundbreaking cinematic event and it's not surprising considering it comes from the director of Tron : Legacy (one of the most visually spectacular flicks of the last decade).
It's set to take us (in awesome IMAX) to a future version of Earth that's evolved beyond recognition. It is here that one man's confrontation with his own past will lead us on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.
It follows Cruise as Jack Harper (how many characters can he play named Jack? Seriously?) one of the last "drone repairmen" still stationed on Earth as part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs.
With a short time left before the end of his mission, things soon go haywire after Jack rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.
While Tron : Legacy was a major letdown in the story department - the visuals were nothing short of spectacular. So you get the sense that even if Oblivion's script is as confusing and as bloated as it seems... it's still gonna look kickass in IMAX!
