It seems like forever since the last Star Trek movie came out and totally reinvented the sci-fi genre and franchise. It was the sort of fresh approach that really had the potential to make a difference. However, the gap has not done the first film any favours - so while the sequel trailer has finally made it to the net... and while it's impressive... the hype surrounding it isn't anywhere near what it should be.
Worse still, we have to wait another year anyway to see the whole thing.
Director J.J. Abrams is back onboard for a second helping of Star Trek nerding, with the explosive action thriller Star Trek Into Darkness.
The story is being kept somewhat underwraps, but here's what we know so far : When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an force of terror (within their own ranks) that has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving Earth in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, the always feisty Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As these legendary characters (Spock, Bones, etc) are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left.
What Abrams has done here is totally "de-nerd" Star Trek. He has made this an event for action fans... it's why the movies can compete on the same level as any of the biggest mainstream franchises on the planet. It'll look even better in IMAX.
The question is, will it live up to Wrath of Khan, previously regarded as one of the best sequels of all time?
