Can you hear that? Listen closely...

Yep, that is the sound of eight million Star Trek fans creaming their skin tight space suits.

For a franchise that was effectively dead in the water a few years ago, the latest JJ Abrams headed jaunt just might turn out to be one of the biggest and most anticipated flicks of 2009. Why? Well, it seems that JJ is the man with the golden touch of credibility these days (heck - the guy even made us forget about how much of a jerk Tom Cruise was witht eh excellent M:I3).

So what's the "reboot" all about?

From director J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible IIILost and Alias) and screenwriters Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (Transformers) comes a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time, Star Trek, featuring a young, new crew venturing boldly where no man has gone before.

The popcorn epic is set to explore the early Starfleet careers of future Enterprise officers Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Amanda Grayson (Winona Ryder), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), McCoy (Karl Urban), Sulu (John Cho), and Chekhov (Anton Yelchin).

A Romulan, Nero (Eric Bana), and a much older Spock (Leonard Nimoy) are influences, as well as Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood), the first captain of the USS Enterprise.

Rumours suggest the story involves an elder Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and a group of Romulans (led by Nero, played by Eric Bana) being transplanted into the past where Spock must prevent the Romulans from irreparably damaging the timeline. To do so, he will have to enlist the assistance of his younger self (Zachary Quinto).

Judging from the trailer, and the amazing teaser already doing the rounds, this is shaping up to be the sort of event movie of the likes we haven't seen since the original Star Wars. It has the potential to become the new benchmark for sc-fi.
