Where the Wild Things Are

THE MOVIE CHANNEL | BOX OFFICE | MORE TRAILERS

Here is one to get excited about.

It's been a long time between drinks for a classic fantasy film to hit our screens. Sure, Harry Potter and Narnia rejuvinated the genre... but with a lot of CGI and such which always reminded us we were watching "a movie".

But, for most of us, films like The Labyrinth and The Never Ending Story - hell, even Return To Oz - has an undeniable "real" feeling to them. Why? Real sets, real midgets in costumes. It was that simple.

And it seems visionary director Spike Jonze has decided that Where The Wild Things Are will follows a similar path. And good on him. Because he's had to fight hard to get the flick in cinemas (he signed on for "final cut" rights, but the studio has delayed the films release because they felt it was "too dark").

But Return To Oz was incredibly dark, as was Never Ending Story - so why should we shield the kids of today from some fantastical horror? After all, they do spend most of their days on an Xbox blasting peoples heads off and stealing fake cars.

This is an adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's story, where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world - a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.

Expect this to be not only a classic for this year... but possibly in the "all time" league.
