The Transporter 2
Review by Clint Morris
It's funny. We've always got an answer for the wife when
she asks, say, why we left the wet towel on the floor, or
forgot to remind her that we've got lunch at the mother-in-law's,
or why we forgot to take the washing off the line.
But when she asks "Why can't he be Bond?" - mid
way through Jason Statham starrer The Transporter 2
- you'll be as stuck as a pedal on a bike.
There really is no clear-cut reason why Jason Statham hasn't
been asked to read for Bond. His character in The Transporter
films - a rugged dapper martial artist who does hush-hush
odd jobs for big-time players - is well-dressed, has a hot
car, is a ladies man and can categorically hold his own against
the bad guys. And all without ruffling up his tie.
If there is a reason why Statham's not being asked to test
for 007 - it's that EON have a little egg on their faces after
watching these Transporter movies. Why? They're better
than the past couple of Bond's combined. And this new sequel?
Possibly one of the best action films of the year.
The plot can be summed up quickly - Frank (Statham) uses
his skill, expertise, pimped-out car and Kung Fu to rescue
the child of a wealthy couple he has been working for as a
driver - but then, it's not the plot you're going into the
film to see, it's the padding to the plot.
Granted, there's a few CGI scenes that take you away from
it - the scene on the plane at the end, for one - but when
the what's real to what's not real equation favours the former,
that's a minor injustice. This film has some of the most amazing
action sequences and some of the most eye-popping fight scenes
since the original Matrix. It's an action buff's wet
dream.
Finally a Hollywood film that gives you more bang for your
buck.
